"#Thinking - A Gift to Human Beings"-

I was feeling very fresh when I arose in the morning. There was something very different about the day. Was it because it was very beautiful outside? Was it because I had now settled down in this place after the initial anxiety of adjusting to new surroundings? Or was it that something had changed deep down within me?

As suggested by my Guruji, I spent that day reading the first chapter of the Arthashatra - Aanvikshiki Sthapana. There was something about that chapter and that word - Aan-vik-shi-ki. It was mysterious and also gripping, yet, not fully understood.

I looked up the commentary on it in various books by other scholars. There were numerous translations. Aanvikshiki meant philosophy, Bhramavidya, spiritual knowledge, logical thinking etc.

But that day, I wanted to know what Guruji’s take on this would be. The knowledge of the Arthashastra starts with the sutra:

Aanvikshiki, Trai, Vaarta, Dandaniti cheti Vidya (1.2.1)

“A king or leader is required to possess four types of knowledge - Aanvikshiki (philosophy), Trai (Vedas), Vaarta (economics) and Dandaniti (political science),” Guruji translated. “Once he understands these four types of knowledge, the leader will be very efficient and productive. Each of these has been explained in detail in the Arthashastra. But the most important is Aanvikshiki,” he stressed.

“Guruji, why is it so important?” I added this to my list of questions.

“Chanakya himself explains the concept in the same chapter:

Aanvikshiki is ever thought of as the lamp of all sciences, as the means of all actions and as the support of all laws and duties.

It is a guiding force,” my Guru emphasised. “Thinking is the very foundation of any activity, the basis on which human beings develop from one generation to another.

Aanvikshiki is best translated as the science of thinking. And thinking is nature’s gift to human beings. They are endowed with a very useful asset called the ‘intellect’. This is what makes us the crown of all of god’s creations.” Yes, I think, therefore, I am.

“But the most surprising part is that human beings do not like to think at all,” Guruji said sadly.

“Why do we not like to think?” I wanted to know.

“Thinking takes a lot of energy. Scientific research has also proven that it is not easy to think logically. It is a very exhausting activity. It can lead to fatigue. Man likes to take the easy path.

Why waste all that energy? Best not to think at all, right? But surprisingly, human beings have progressed only because of thinkers - the thought leaders. They ask difficult questions and seek difficult answers. They break the status quo.”

I asked,”So, what we require is to ensure thinking for progress and development? And that is what Aanvikshiki is all about?”

“Not just thinking, but the right thinking, philosophical thinking in particular,” He clarified.

“Aanvikshiki is about alternative thinking, lateral thinking, thinking out of the box. But, it is also about questioning if there is a box at all.” So many dimensions! “Just thinking is not enough; it has to be based on Dharma-righteousness.” Now, I had started understanding a little bit about why Aanvikshiki was also called philosophy.

“Even without the base of philosophy and spirituality, you can still think and create new objects, but you may cause a lot of harm to other human beings and the environment in doing so,” Guruji said gravely.

Yes, this philosophical thinking is the very foundation on which a leader is created by Chanakaya...
